After an initial visit to the Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, PA, my team and I found several questions and curiosities which we then pursued to answer through design methods. What we were most struck by was the various forms of representation of someone after their death.

Now that we had these findings, we wanted to share our findings with other designers. In order to do so, our team created a 'Create Your Own Spontaneous Memorial Joke Kit.' This practical joke kit comes with all of the items that are essential in a convincing spontaneous memorial. It is intended to inform designers about what is essential when creating these sacred tributes, and why.

My editorial design experience made me very curious about how news and journalism delivery will change in the future. This curiosity sparked my senior independent study rethinking how the news and editorial content of the New York Times can be delivered on a digital tablet. How can digital news effectively utilize all of the affordances of a digital format to create a richer, well-rounded experience for their audience in a way that does
not yet exist?

The first half of the project was dedicated to both primary and secondary research focused around digital news reading habits and user interaction with digital news. The second phase focused on synthesizing the research through writing, then designing the interactions between the application and the user. The final deliverables shown here are a futurcast video illustrating my ideas, and select spreads from the process book which
accompanies the project.

I have worked in the art department at Vanity Fair Magazine at Conde Nast Publications for two consecutive summers. During that time, I collaborated with the art and photography department to create magazine spreads. I also edited and selected photographs for each issue while simultaneously learning the inner workings of one of the world’s most significant publications. I worked on both the print magazine and the iPad version, learning the work flow of the Adobe Digital Publishing platform. This year, I was appointed the principal designer for the 2011 International Best Dressed List project featured in the 2011 September Issue.

I combined the initials of my name to produce a wordmark. I then developed this wordmark into a personal identity. The letterforms are based off of Gotham. Mrs. Eaves italic is used as a supporting typeface in the identity. The set that I created includes business cards, a poster demonstrating all facets of the identity, and an animation of the mark.

It is no secret that print as a medium is on the decline, but will there be a day when it disappears altogether? This is the question I explored for this book project. Using articles, statements, and ideas formed around this topic, I used the medium of the book to exhibit both confirming and opposing ideas. My goal was to bring a new perspective to the debate by extracting the topic's most prominent arguments and re-presenting them in a challenging format.

I collaborated with my classmate, Victor Ng to create the branding for A-Line skirts. A-Line skirts is a local Pittsburgh fashion house under the Kelly Lane label. Her service allows women to personalize a-line skirts utilizing leftover fabrics from her previous lines. Keeping true to the Kelly Lane brand, the reversible skirts are made of environmentally friendly fibers. The mark, packaging, print material, look book, and photography were designed to reflect a creative, sophisticated, and modern woman.

This was a project that explored the creation and utilization of a non-traditional grid. For this project, the grid used was derived from a piece of famous deconstructivist architecture. Shown here is the process of the grid's creation, its manipulation through collage, and the final pieces. The results of this exploration were a series of four tickets and poster to a deconstructivist architecture exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, titled 'Unfold.'

The Heights is a news magazine concept for the Brooklyn Heights area of New York City. I developed it at the School of Visual Arts Continuing Education program under the guidance of E. Genevieve Williams. Doing this project helped me understand the process of developing magazines from beginning to end. This included everything from creating its physical and typographical structure to developing its identity and content.

I created a city proposal for Pittsburgh's Point Breeze neighborhood in the form of a book. Point Breeze is a place so charming that it was the inspiration for the children's TV show, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. The book proposed that the Point Breeze neighborhood help improve its less prosperous surroundings by leveraging its status as the model community. I conducted a combination of primary and secondary research on Point Breeze to inform my recommendations.

I worked with the producer of the new documentary, The 6th Extinction, to create a motion piece centered around one of the most critically endangered species in the world, the black rhino. The purpose of my video was to raise awareness of the animal's demise caused by the illegal trade of their horns from specific regions of Africa for arms and weaponry in China. The weapons are then used by the African rebel armies that contribute to genocide, poverty, famine, and corruption in various parts of Africa. This video addresses not only the harm poaching has on the black rhino but also the damage it is causing on the human race. This piece won the 2011 AIGA Pittsburgh Design Excellence Award.
